Stennis Space Center Tour

Both the National Buoy Data Center (NBDC) as well as the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO) has graciously offered to host a tour of their operations facilities at the Stennis Space Center on Monday, February 4, 2019 as part of the Underwater Intervention Conference.  The tour will begin and conclude at the New Orleans Convention Center near conference registration with bus transportation to/from the base in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi provided.  This tour is an all-day affair conducted by senior-level staff from both commands.  As this tour involves access to a secure US military facility, attendance will be limited to US Citizens ONLY.  Tour attendees must provide personal information (full name as shown on driver's license or other approved federal identification and citizenship) no later than January 18, 2019 in order to forward same to base security for processing.

Details of Tour
The tour will begin in front of the New Orleans Convention Center (NOCC) at 0730 and will return to that same location with the conclusion of the tour at 1730.  The drive from the NOCC to Stennis Space Center is approximately 45 minutes via Interstate 10.  Bus transportation will be provided as part of the cost of the tour.
Schedule – Monday February 4th
(0730-0830): Drive to Stennis Space Center
(0830-0915): Check in with base security for base access
(0930-1130): Tour of NDBC by Helmut Portman, Director
(1200-1300): Lunch at base cafeteria (lunch at participant’s expense)
(1330-1600): Tour of NAVO by Dr. William Burnett, Technical Director
(1600-1730): Drive back to New Orleans Convention Center for conclusion of tour
$65 per person to cover the cost of bus transportation – access to the base cafeteria will be provided for participants to purchase their own meal.
Specific Tour Details (Casual Dress/Comfortable Shoes)
On-Site Coordinator
– The tour will be coordinated on-site by David Selby, Operations Manager of SeaTrepid and a 25-year US Navy Veteran Master Diver
NBDC - This is a walking tour of the operations center for NBDC where NOAA’s deep sea buoys are assembled, staged and fielded along with a tour of the operations center which manages the buoys worldwide.
Navy - This is a bus/walking tour designated to highlight Naval Oceanography's unmanned systems, training and operation's center.

The tour will be conducted by a senior-level manager of the command knowledgeable of the command’s purpose, its operation as well as its inventory of field assets.  A general explanation of the functionality of these equipment systems is an integral part of the tour.
Summary and Conclusion
The participants will be provided access to base facilities as part of this tour along with bus transportation to/from the base.  Participants are encouraged to engage our hosts in thoughtful questions and dialog.  We are proud of our nation’s meteorological and oceanographic capabilities centered at Stennis Space Center with our hosts as the core drivers of these functions for both NOAA and the US Navy.
